ADUs have many common names like secondary suites, in-law apartments, mew homes, granny flats, mother-in-law suites, coach houses, backyard cottages, and accessory apartments. They are used as overflow quarters for guest and visiting family members, or as rental units. They are often an apartment above a garage. They can also be one story, and do not need to be attached to a garage or the primary house. ADUs are addressed by local communities through zoning ordinances. Each governing authority has unique regulations that apply to that district.
